For centuries, the Native Americans - likely the Delaware, Susquehannock, Shawnee, and Iroquois - used the mineral springs in the foothills of the Allegheny Mountains for their curative powers, a custom that they shared with local doctor John Anderson in the 1790s. Anderson then began prescribing specialized treatments for afflicted guests, who journeyed from around the world to experience the healing waters. To accommodate the growing number of patients, Anderson built an inn in 1806 using stone quarried from the mountain adjacent to the springs. Over the next century, Omni Bedford Springs Resort & Spa added fine resort amenities, including one of the first golf courses and indoor pools in America. A $120 million renovation has since restored this National Historic Landmark, which is once again one of America’s grandest resort hotels.

Discover

  • Discover the amazing heritage of the Omni Bedford Springs Resort, stewarded today through the preservation of many of the original features. Dating back to 1806, this outstanding holiday destination still displays its original red brick façade and white columns and is designated as a U.S. National Historic Landmark District.
  • Learn how the Omni Bedford Springs Resort became the site of many significant moments in history. The resort has hosted a long list of celebrities, wealthy clientele, corporate magnates, and dignitaries from around the world. To date, the resort has hosted 13 U.S. presidents, including Thomas Jefferson, Dwight D. Eisenhower, and Ronald Reagan. James Buchanan in particular adored the resort, using it as a temporary office whenever he went on vacation.
  • Stroll or hike along the more than 25 miles of trails that wind throughout the grounds. The recreation options include an ADA-compliant wheelchair accessible trail. These tranquil pathways are located within 2,200 acres of private forest, which are part of the Allegheny Mountains. A map will be provided for the flora and fauna indigenous to Western Pennsylvania to be found nearby. The picturesque Bedford Heritage Trail is a 2.65 mile trail that begins at the resort and ends at Fort Bedford Park in downtown Bedford, with its historic architecture, museums, monuments, and wining-and-dining opportunities.

Explore

  • Visit The Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art (SAMA). The Museum maintains a permanent collection of more than 4,500 works by local, regional, national, and international artists. SAMA Bedford is located in the 200-year-old landmark Anderson House, which is now a state-of-the-art museum featuring eight galleries exhibiting a wide variety of artwork.
  • Explore Shawnee Lake at Shawnee State Park. A scenic 20-minute drive from the resort will bring guests to the 3,983-acre park, with recreational opportunities perfect for any season. Adventures await for any season and skill level: hike, bike, picnic, swim, boat, fish, hunt, snowmobile, ice fish, ice skate, and more.
  • Take in the views of the beautiful Bedford County with a self-guided covered bridges tour. Bedford County is well known for its 14 covered bridges, such as the Bowser Covered Bridge, Snook’s Covered Bridge, and the Hewitt Covered Bridge. Built approximately a century ago by craftsmen who worked almost entirely by hand, these structures withstand the rain, snow, and frequent use of the traveling public.

Listen to the stories of how past presidents used the facility to regenerate their weary minds and bodies. Afterward, cozy up near a relaxing firepit and enjoy a cocktail or s’more underneath a brilliant night sky. Or play a round at one of the country’s first golf courses.
