On 550 acres on Mobile Bay in Point Clear, the Grand Hotel Golf Resort & Spa has been known as The Queen of Southern Resorts for over 175 years. Built in 1847 by F.H. Chamberlain, the historic hotel completed a massive transformation in 2018. The resort served as a hospital in the Civil War and military training ground in World War II. Each afternoon the Grand Hotel Golf Resort & Spa salutes past and current military and honors the resort’s history with a procession, cannon firing, and social gathering. Known for iconic oak trees and sunsets, the Grand Hotel surrounds guests with Southern comfort and impeccable service. From golf and spa to swimming and boating, the one-of-a-kind resort offers exceptional recreational activities for leisure and meeting guests.

Discover

  • Discover how Grand Hotel Golf Resort & Spa stewards natural landscapes and coastal life in Point Clear, Alabama. Stroll under the hotel’s centuries-old iconic oaks, dripping in Spanish moss and resurrection fern. 141 magnificent live oaks grace the resort’s grounds, their reaching branches and wide roots forming an iconic symbol of longevity and strength across the Gulf Coast. Grab a plant guide from the resort to help uncover the majesty of the coast’s breathtaking flora. End the day by embracing the resort’s location on the bay and watch a spectacular sunset over the water from Point Clear as pelicans fly overhead – a daily tradition since the resort opened its doors in 1847.
  • Hear stories from the hotel’s resident historian during a captivating talk each afternoon. Then view one of the resort’s most historic guest registers on display or curl up with a book by the resort’s six-sided fireplace in the lobby. The hotel’s history dates back to the Civil War when it was a hospital after the Battle of Vicksburg in 1863 and later, in 1864, during the Battle of Mobile Bay when Rear Admiral David G. Farragut famously exclaimed: “Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead.”
  • Visit the Nall Mezzanine Gallery on the second floor of the main building. Nall, a local artist with a resounding legacy in Alabama, helped shape the resort’s art collection. He also was the inspiration for a new addition to the resort’s stunning collection of unique rooms; art lovers might enjoy an evening in the Nall Suite steps from the gallery.

Explore

  • Hop on a bike to explore the magnificent grounds of Grand Hotel Golf Resort & Spa. Marvel at the garden before riding across the marina’s covered bridge, around the lagoon, and past the two scenic Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail courses.
  • Tour the captivating sights of Mobile Bay and learn about the past and future of the region’s delicate coastal life. Gaillard Island, untouched by development, is home to 15 species of birds, including the formerly endangered brown pelican. Sail around to Mobile Bay Lighthouse, a stunning landmark that was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. Travel to the USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park to learn about the legendary USS Alabama (BB-60). Commissioned in 1942, the battleship saw extensive service throughout World War II and served with distinction in the Atlantic and Pacific.
  • Stroll the Point Clear Boardwalk and encounter the 28 marvelous historic homes comprising the Point Clear Historic District. The houses, built between 1835 and 1930, feature a spectacular display of rain-porches, a necessary feature for a coastal home, as well as Jubilee bells, a distinctive, local tradition. The Point Clear Boardwalk features a captivating history that turns a simple stroll into an exploration of life on the Gulf Coast. Lucky explorers might even get to experience the natural phenomenon of “Jubilee,” a sudden influx of coastal sea creatures that only happens in two parts of the world, Japan and Point Clear. A Jubilee will ensure an authentic seafood feast.

Experience

  • Marvel at Monarch butterflies on their annual stopover at Grand Hotel Golf Resort & Spa. During October and November, these winged visitors stop for a respite during their yearly migration south, building up strength for a journey across the Gulf of Mexico. Monarch sanctuaries are called waystations, and the Grand Hotel Golf Resort & Spa cultivates the resort’s abundant gardens as a Monarch Waystation by growing native plants like milkweed to provide both nectar and a protective habitat for the thousands of tiny travelers.
  • Embrace the adventures waiting on the grounds of the Grand Hotel Golf Resort & Spa. Invigorate the day with a trip to the resort’s beach volleyball courts, tennis courts, pickleball courts, Games Lawn, or the Grand Slide. Try a hand at fishing in Mobile Bay from the resort’s Grand Pier, or get out on the water in kayaks, all provided by a knowledgeable recreation team. Visitors of all ages will also love feeding the Grand Hotel’s resident ducks at the lagoon – duck food is available at the front desk.
  • Experience the traditions of Grand Hotel Resort Golf & Spa. Watch Grandeur, Grit and Glory Since 1847: A Tribute to the History of the Grand Hotel, a history presentation that is given daily at 3:45 p.m. The viewing begins with a procession from the main lobby fireplace and culminates with the Civil War-replica cannon firing on the edge of Mobile Bay at Cannon Park. Or enjoy a game of championship croquet on the Lakewood Club croquet lawns. Truly a Grand Hotel tradition, croquet has been offered at the resort since the mid-1940s.

Taste

  • Taste what it means to have a cocktail crafted “garden-to-glass” at the resort’s 1847 Bar. Learn about the house-made honey mint syrup that graces the glasses of the Mint Julep and taste the refined Alabama Dettling Bourbon at a daily cocktail presentation.
  • Savor mouth-watering southern fare with ingredients sourced from local farms, fisheries, and the Estate Garden at one of Grand Hotel Golf Resort & Spa’s premier restaurants. The Grand Seafood Experience at Southern Roots celebrates the Gulf Coast’s prize ingredients including shrimp, oysters, and crab claws, while the Bayside Grill boasts a bourbon chocolate peanut butter cake.
  • Unwind with live piano and the finest mixologies in the South at Bucky’s Lounge at Grand Hotel Golf Resort & Spa. Enjoy the outstanding collection of rare whiskeys, fine wines, and small plates during a spectacular Point Clear sunset, or under a luminous night sky next to a warm fire.
