tours

The Wigwam was originally built at the height of the Roaring Twenties as a gathering place for Ohio-based executives of Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company. Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company discovered that the West Valley of Phoenix was a prime location to grow cotton for the production of rubber tires. Accordingly, a residential complex was constructed for workers and their families during the growing season, as was a vacation retreat for company executives to stay in when visiting the cotton-growing operation. As the retreat grew in popularity, lodgings and amenities were added to the resort. On Thanksgiving Day in 1929, The Wigwam opened as a full-service resort with accommodations for just 24 guests. Today, this AAA four-diamond desert oasis spans 440 acres and boasts 331 guestrooms, a luxurious spa, a fitness center, three restaurants and bars, three swimming pools, prominent conference facilities, and three championship golf courses, including two historic courses designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr. Over the years, The Wigwam has remained one of the most iconic hotels in Litchfield Park Arizona, offering a timeless blend of history and luxury.

Discover

  • Discover The Wigwam’s serene landscapes. With 440 acres of wide-open spaces and 300 days of sunshine yearly, The Wigwam’s beautifully manicured grounds promote both an invigorating lifestyle for guests seeking an active itinerary, as well as a tranquil oasis for those seeking a calm space for relaxation.
  • Admire the historical character of The Wigwam. Paul W. Litchfield founded this wonderful holiday destination. The Spanish Colonial Revival-style architecture can especially be seen in the hotel’s Organization House. Built in 1918 as a vacation retreat for company executives of the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, the Organization House is the cornerstone of The Wigwam’s authenticity and southwestern charm.
  • Play a round on one of the hotel’s three historic golf courses. Each championship course offers variety in both diversity and challenge and spectacular views in every direction, with the original nine holes dating back to 1930.

Explore

  • Explore the diverse architecture in the surrounding cities. Take a walking tour of Historic Downtown Litchfield Park, a former Goodyear company town. Guests start at the hotel and have the opportunity to visit mid-century churches, general stores, and other community buildings. Or join an Insider Mid-century Tour of Scottsdale and visit the Frank Lloyd Wright Price House and Garden Apartment District. Both attractions provide wonderful examples of American architectural design and landscaping.
  • Travel to the Sonoran Desert by hiking up Camelback Mountain or Squaw Peak, or head to Papago Park’s “Hole in the Rock” for a closeup of the rugged terrain. Early morning is the preferred hiking hour as the desert sun is not directly overhead. Be sure to bring plenty of water.
  • Explore the local cultural heritage of the area surrounding The Wigwam. The Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art is a remarkable cultural institution featuring some of the finest modern art in the region. The P.W. Litchfield Heritage Center is a free, all-volunteer organization dedicated to preserving the history of the southwest valley.
