The American Club was founded in 1918 by former Kohler Co. President Walter J. Kohler, Sr., to provide lodging and respite for immigrant laborers who worked at Kohler Co. After extensive renovations of The American Club’s main building to maintain historic features, today the hotel is recognized as a AAA Five-Diamond hotel. The baths are outfitted with modern amenities from Kohler Co., and The American Club’s distinguished hallways display antiques from the town’s varied history. Whistling Straits and Blackwolf Run, four world-class golf courses designed by Pete Dye; a 500-acre nature preserve, Kohler Waters Spa, and the Kohler Design Center, all ensure an experience like no other. It is truly an American classic.

  • Discover the history and architecture of The American Club. Set in a brick, Tudor Revival-style 1918 building that once served as a dormitory for immigrant workers at Kohler Company, The American Club was named in the hope that it would be a factor in instilling a patriotic love among its first inhabitants.
  • Stroll through the hotel and get an intimate glimpse the original American Club historical spirit. The oak-paneled hallways are hung with pictures of more simple, bygone days. The 100-foot flagpole and American flag are just where they were in 1918. In 1981, The American Club was rededicated as an elegant hotel that is listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.
  • Admire the lush gardens of The American Club. The seeds for the gardens of Kohler were planted in 1913 when Walter J. Kohler, Sr., traveled to Europe to study garden cities. He then worked with the Olmsted brothers, whose landscape firm designed Central Park in New York City, to plan the green spaces that beautify the Village of Kohler and Kohler Company campus—the first of two 50-year master plans.

  • Visit Waelderhaus, a tribute to the architectural style of the Bregenzerwald region of Austria, the ancestral homeland of the Kohler family. This “house in the woods” features carvings, woodcuts, iron, and pewter work designed by Kaspar Albrecht, a talented Austrian sculptor and architect.
  • Explore the era of stagecoach travel at Wade House Historic Site, which offers a glimpse back to a horse-powered world. Visit the site to experience what it was like when travelers and horses rested in Greenbush for a time, halfway between Sheboygan and Fond du Lac.

  • Enjoy Kohler-Andrae State Park, one of the last natural preserves along the Lake Michigan shore. It comprises two adjacent Wisconsin state parks: Terry Andrae State Park, established in 1927, and John Michael Kohler State Park, established in 1966. There are miles of beach, shimmering Lake Michigan water, and an abundance of wildlife and recreational activities for everyone.
