Pinehurst Resort and its village were designed by famed landscape architect Fredrick Law Olmsted as a health retreat amid towering pines and mild Southern breezes. Wide verandas, afternoon tea, walking trains, and bucolic pathways meander through the quaint New England-style village, which is full of shops, galleries, and other historic and cultural attractions.

In fact, Pinehurst No. 2, the centerpiece of Pinehurst Resort, hosted more single golf championships—including the U.S. Open, U.S. Women’s Open, PGA Championship, the Ryder Cup and PGA TOUR Championship—than any other site in North America.
- Step back into a more gracious time when entering The Carolina Hotel, which opened its doors in 1901. This majestic historic hotel with its signature copper cupola and sweeping verandas recalls an era when elegance defined grand hotels and resorts. This AAA Four Diamond destination has 230 historic guestrooms and suites to adore.
- Walk into the charming inn that has been at the heart of the village of Pinehurst since 1895. The Holly Inn was Pinehurst’s first hotel and features 82 guest rooms and suites, each as unique as the AAA Four Diamond inn itself. All the expected comforts are here, augmented by Tiffany lamps, natural botanical prints and rocking chairs.

- Explore the village of Pinehurst. Founder James Walker Tufts originally envisioned a beautiful, healthful, New England-style village where the ill could recuperate in pine-scented air and sunshine. Pinehurst began when Tufts purchased 600 acres and commissioned the firm of Frederick Law Olmstead, who designed New York's Central Park, to design Tufts' vision and bring it to life. Many of the original buildings of the village still exist, and some can be toured today.
- Visit the Weymouth Woods Sandhills Nature Preserve, just 15 minutes or so from Pinehurst Resort. It's a remnant of the millions of acres of longleaf pine forests that once covered the southeastern United States. The pines and wiregrass are interspersed with a network of short, easy trails. Take a ranger-led hike and learn about the rare and intriguing species that live here, including the red-cockaded woodpecker, pine barrens tree frog, bog spicebush, fox squirrel, and myriad wildflowers. The visitor center’s museum-quality exhibits explore the longleaf forest, its flora and fauna, and its unique history.
- Head over to the Tufts Archives at the Given Memorial Library in the historic village, across the street from The Holly Inn. It's the primary location of Pinehurst records and memorabilia, and includes a huge collection of pin flags from Donald Ross golf courses, displays, photos, and archives of past events, famous guests, and other historic milestones.
Experience
- Ride a horse at the McLendon Hills Equestrian Center, a 25-acre, full-service, state-of-the-art equine facility only 20 minutes from Pinehurst Resort. There are three outdoor rings, including a dressage riding area, lighted riding area, and hilltop ring with show-quality jumps; a riding arena; rider's lounge; and almost nine miles of bridle trails beginning and ending at the Center, traversing woods, fields, hills, and streams. The Center offers riding lessons, with advance reservations.
- Stroll around the 27-acre Sandhills Horticultural Gardens on the campus of Sandhills Community College. The gardens are usually open to the public daily. Wander through an English-style formal garden, holly and conifer collections, a native wetland trail, collections of azaleas, rhododendrons, and roses, and a xeriscape devoted to cacti, yuccas, and other succulents.
- Experience the Uwharrie National Forest nearby. Extending for 51,000 acres, this majestic outodoor destination is among the bets palces in the region for hiking, biking, and sightseeing.

- Taste a brew at Pinehurst Brewing Co., which occupies what was once the original Pinehurst village steam plant. After an extensive renovation to restore much of the building’s original façade, Pinehurst Brewing Co. is home to an array of craft beers brewed on-site as well as a full kitchen, featuring authentic North Carolina barbecue and Texas-style brisket cooked daily at the brewery’s smokehouse.
- Sip a different kind of brew at Lady Bedford's Tea Parlour in Pinehurst. They serve breakfast—quiche, scones, crepes—and a choice of a proper afternoon tea, or a heartier lunch menu, all served up in a quaint, charming atmosphere.
