In 1929, John and Helen Murphey created Hacienda del Sol, a desert oasis and “home-away from-home” ranch school for “girls only.” Built in a Spanish Colonial Revival-style architecture, the establishment showcased many details that were crafted by the Murphey’s themselves. The prestigious school’s roster boasted some of the country’s most elite families: Vanderbilt, Pillsbury, Maxwell, Westinghouse, and Campbell, to name a few. In 1948, Hacienda del Sol was converted into a guest ranch that immediately attracted the Silver Screen’s most notable stars. Leading men John Wayne and Clark Gable both signed their names to the resort’s guestbook. Today, simple pleasures and understated elegance are found in abundance at this classic Arizona resort.

Discover

  • Discover a desert paradise at Hacienda del Sol. Soak up the Tucson sunshine among soaring cacti in the serene botanical gardens, bask in the rejuvenating resort pools, or join a scenic nature walk to spot the local flora and fauna. Expert landscapers select plant life that best suits the desert environment, allowing Hacienda del Sol’s surroundings to stay as natural possible.
  • Marvel at the stunning Spanish Colonial Revival-style architecture, including the original 1929 gateway arch. Hacienda del Sol’s historic structure is framed by the picturesque Santa Catalina Mountain Range, making it an iconic destination in the American southwest and a once-destination for luminaries such as John Wayne, Katharine Hepburn, and Clark Gable.
  • Notice an original piece of Tucson artwork gracing each guestroom. Hacienda del Sol embraces local artists by showcasing contemporary prints, paintings, and photographs throughout the interior, turning a resort stay into a spectacular, curated experience with distinct Tucson flair. Hacienda del Sol has been featured on The 2025 Top 25 Historic Hotels of America® Most Magnificent Art Collections List.

Explore

  • Stroll through Hacienda del Sol to enjoy over 100 pieces of artwork in the resort’s sculpture gallery. The sculptures were curated in part by Jeff Timan and Robyn Kessler, long-term stewards of Hacienda del Sol. Many pieces – recognizable by the medium of welded steel and an abstract nature – were created by Timan himself. The collection is constantly evolving, so grab a self-guided tour and explore captivating works installed across the 34-acre grounds.
  • Explore the natural wonders of the Sonoran Desert. Travel to Sabino Canyon for breathtaking outdoor explorations fit for any adventure level. Stop by a community oasis and nature center, Tohono Chul, to uncover the secrets of desert wildlife.
  • Delight in the captivating collection at the nearby Mini Time Machine Museum of Miniatures. With over 500 dollhouses and roomboxes on display, there is no shortage of exploration and amusement. The museum also offers programs in the art of miniature making.

Experience

  • Experience Hacienda del Sol’s vibrant past by joining a history tour, offered by the resort each Tuesday and Friday. Walk through the former finishing school halls, admire the Spanish Colonial Revival-style architecture, and learn about the Golden Age Hollywood actors who made Hacienda del Sol their desert retreat.
  • Invigorate the day with offerings fit for any health routine, each prestinely crafted to complement the stunning and tranquil landscape of the Sonoran Desert. Engage in revitalizing sound baths and guided yoga before indulging in the serenity of The Spa at Hacienda del Sol. Treatments are thoughtfully curated to nurture body and soul.
  • Experience the rich cultural heritage in the city of Tucson, Arizona. Watch performances at the historic Fox Theatre, explore visions of the Wild West at Old Tucson, or unwind under a canopy of stars at Hacienda del Sol, which offers an extensive calendar of events and live music.

Taste

  • Dine at The Grill at Hacienda del Sol, a AAA Four Diamond restaurant that was once voted Tucson’s Most Romantic Dining Spot. Watch the sunset turn the sky luminous shades of blue and pink while sipping a vintage from the restaurant’s award-winning wine list.
  • Try the “Sonoran Hot Dog” at Hacienda del Sol’s Terraza Garden Patio & Lounge. This Southern Arizona favorite is named for Sonora, Mexico, the region in which the street food creation originated. The hot dog is bacon-wrapped and served on a “bolillo,” the Mexican adaptation of a French baguette. Toppings include pinto beans, jalapeño salsa, and crema.
  • Taste local dishes across the region and discover why Tucson, Arizona was named a UNESCO City of Gastronomy. The area's vibrant and historic culinary scene makes Tucson the first American city to carry this title.
