2025 Avenue of the Stars, Los Angeles, United States, 90067 Original Property Opened in 1966 Historic Hotels Worldwide member since 2022

In 1961, real estate developer William Zeckendorf and ALCOA purchased nearly 180 acres from 20th Century Fox in downtown Los Angeles. The studio had downsized amid a number of box-office flops that culminated with the film Cleopatra, at the time the most expensive movie ever made. Construction began shortly thereafter under the guidance of notable architect Minoru Yamasaki and finally concluded in 1966. Upon opening, the Century Plaza Hotel quickly earned a reputation for its elegance and luxury. America’s most illustrious people soon began to appear at the hotel regularly, enchanted by its unrivaled service and sophisticated character. Numerous high-profile celebrities attended the opening gala, which was officiated by Bob Hope and Andy Williams. Even more celebrities arrived when the Century Plaza Hotel hosted the 19th Primetime Emmy Awards, as well as both the 12th and 13th Annual Grammy Awards. Other superstars could be spotted reserving guestrooms or holding small performances, as well. For instance, Sonny & Cher recorded their first live album on-site and Elton John gave an exclusive solo show entitled “Return to the Century” in one of the hotel’s venues.

Today, the Fairmont Century Plaza continues to offer guests a luxurious, world-class respite from the excitement of sunny Los Angeles. The magnificent architecture sets the tone for a visit, and the comfortable accommodations, French-inspired fare offered at the hotel's restaurant, and the glamorous rooftop pool only add to the overall experience.
